    10-Day Hoof Groom Course Overview

Please Note: The 10-day Hoof Groom Certification Course may be split up into two 5-day courses in some locations. Please contact your clinic host for details.

    General Description:

The Hoof Groom Course is a ten-day immersion into hoof care. It is designed to provide students with functional and practical skills necessary to consistently perform a physiologically correct trim on non-pathological hooves. The Hoof Groom Course is the prerequisite for the Certified Hoof Technician Course which delves further into pathology and manipulation of the trim to correct aberrant hoof form and to maximize performance. The Hoof Groom Course will begin on a Friday morning and continue through the following weekend, ending on Sunday afternoon for a total of ten consecutive days. The first 3 and last 3 days of the course will consist of cadaver trimming, dissections and demonstrations. Days 4-7 will consist of hands-on trimming instruction on live horses. Natural horse handling and management will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the course.

    Topics and Activities:
Through lecture, demonstration, dissection, discussion and critiques, students will learn:

  • Hoof care theory and history
  • Support for the natural hoof
  • Anatomy and physiology of the hoof
  • Mapping the hoof
  • Physiologically correct trimming
  • Natural horse handling and management

  • Prerequisites:
All individuals applying for the Hoof Groom Course must meet the following criteria:

  • Attendance at a minimum of one United Horsemanship two-day clinic.

  • Class Size:

Due to the intensive, hands-on nature of the Hoof Groom Course, class size will be limited to fifteen (15) participants.

United Horsemanship retains the right to cancel the scheduled clinic should registration fail to meet minimum numbers. In this event United Horsemanship will refund 100% of the enrollee's deposit.

    Fee Schedule:

The fee for the ten-day course is $1,100. A deposit if 50% ($550.00) is due upon application. The remaining balance ($550.00) is due on the first day of the course.

If your course is split up into two 5-day courses, the fee for attending the first 5 days is $800. When you attend the second course of 5 days, the balance will be due of $300.

    Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Due to the limited class size and materials cost, if you cancel UP TO 30 days prior to the starting date of the class, one-half of your deposit will be forfeited. If you cancel WITHIN 30 days prior to the start date, your entire deposit will be forfeited. In the event that United Horsemanship cancels the class, your deposit will be refunded in full.

    Tools:

Students must bring their own tools. Tools used in class include hoof knives, knife sharpeners, rasps, nippers, and rubberized gloves. Tools may be available for purchase at the course.

    Accomodations:

All accommodations will be the responsibility of the student. A list of hotels, campsites, and/or host families may be requested from the clinic host upon application.
