During the summer of 2003, Martha Olivo taught a 10 day Hoof Groom Clinic in Southern Oregon. Attending were 15 students from around the country. Four of these are from the Jacksonville, Oregon area. These four women have formed the Southern Oregon United Horsemanship group. They work in conjunction with the Northern California United Horsemanship group. These members have created their own educational road show. Hundreds of hours of research were needed to acquire pictures and educational material. The mission was to present information to all ages. All this is presented on large display boards. We have 20 sets of bones from feet and legs of horses with various ailments. We present dissected cadavers for people to see inside the hoof. We also include some freeze dried hooves. Doctors, specialists and equine experts are presented through video. This free Hoof Care Fair is the first of its kind. Farriers attending commented that the educational materials were the most complete that they had seen at a single showing. The local veterinarians requested that we participate at the annual veterinarian symposium. This is open to the public each spring in southern Oregon. The Grange, 4 H clubs, horse clubs and OSU Extension office have asked to sponsor this fair. The "Hoof Care Fair" as we call it, generally runs for 5 hours. People come and circulate throughout the auditorium. There are 5 different TV setups with each showing a different video. People browse around the large auditorium displaying 60 feet of display boards showing photos, diagrams, and more. A long table displays various types of horse hoof boot styles, reference books, and binders with case studies. There are 5 to 6 U.H. Hoof Grooms who are there for questions and explanations. Grooms can also help visitors with dilemma's they may have concerning stalling, terrain needs, and more. These Hoof Care Fairs are free. The purpose is to get information out and educate the horse community. Barefoot information has not been the primary message. We are hopeful that the owners will learn enough to realize barefoot is best for the horse. We are trying to get owners to be more knowledgeable and accountable for their horse's feet. Our two U.H. groups hold free monthly trimfests in two locations. One is in Montague, California and the other in Jacksonville, Oregon. People can come and learn to trim, with our assistance, on $5.00 cadaver hoof. Many bring their own horses and we oversee their work at no charge. This provides a support group for us all. We can however, on request, trim their horses for a fee. Currently our upcoming schedules for shows are: January 24th in Scott Valley, California February 9th in Medford, Oregon April 30th-May 2nd at the Klamath Falls Packing Clinic (3 day show providing lectures and a booth displaying much of our Hoof Fair materials). Not only do our two groups provide the community with education, several members have been working with rescue centers providing free hoof care for these neglected animals. |
